MIN 38 - land at Waveney Forest, Fritton

Representation ID: 98493

Received: 12/10/2019

Respondent: Fritton Action Rescue Group

Representation Summary:

MIN 38 Urgent demand to conserve amenity
We stand by our previous submissions against MIN38 Waveney Forest becoming a sand and gravel quarry, as shown in the 1st Public Consultation. But ask that the following additional factors be taken into account:
1. The World Meteorelogical Assn. states that the factors driving climate change are accelerating.
This was confirmed by the recent New York meeting of the UN' s intergovernmental panel on climate change. They state that sea level rise, due to melting of polar ice sheets, is twice as great as previously thought and accelerating.
The sea level rise (previously stable) over the last 20 years is already making low level islands and coastal settlements uninhabitable (Solomon islands), creating climate refugees. Drastic action is required to reduce carbon emissions world wide.
2. Accidental and deliberate burning of woodland worldwide, makes it essential to maintain and increase tree cover whenever possible to sequester carbon and limit the effect on climate change.
3. Increased media attention has greatly increased national interest in WW2 archaeology, making the preservation of existing military sites more important than hither to.
4. Surface erosion, following rainstorms continues to expose live munitions, requiring the services of army bomb disposal. We recommend a full mine clearance of the whole forest site, prior to any excavation on safety grounds.
5. Economic hardship has caused a large increase in dog walking as a source of income. Enforcement of dog fouling law on resort beaches plus the installation of a dog waste bin, emphasise the importance of the continuance of the forest as a public amenity, as created from public funds.
